There was a fire, long ago, though no one in this small town talks about it. But when a stranger arrives looking for answers about their father, the town must confront a haunted past — and decide what that means for the future. All the while, the ensemble of actors telling the story tries to figure out: how should it all end? Full of whimsy and physical storytelling, An Otherwise Lovely Residential Area is a devised play about love, ghosts, and the revolutionary power of imagination.

About The Furnace

The Furnace is a non-hierarchical artists’ collective making ensemble-driven theater experiences that nurture an inclusive, progressive community. We began training together in April of 2024, playing with techniques for discovering vulnerability and immediacy on stage, and experimenting with different ways of making theatre. Our first show, An Otherwise Lovely Residential Area, is the fruition of our first attempts at devising. The script was written collaboratively by all 6 company members, and was both a test of, and a testament to, our core values: communication and care.
