ABOUT THE SHOW

The courtesan, Violetta, has vowed to remain "always free" and unencumbered by the trappings of love... but will fate and honor allow her to succeed in her goal? La traviata tells the tragic story of the love between the courtesan Violetta and the romantic Alfredo Germont. Played out against the hypocrisy of upper-class fashionable society, Alfredo and Violetta’s love threatens to shame his family. When his father directly appeals to Violetta to relinquish her one chance of happiness, Violetta submits, and her act of self-sacrifice leads to her paying the ultimate price.

Welcome to Violetta’s soiree at the BARN OPERA House!

You are invited, not only to the GRAND OPENING of Vermont’s only operatically dedicated performance venue, but also to a party that Violetta Valery is throwing for all her friends! This production of La Traviata will be somewhat audience participatory, (if you choose to participate!) The piano will be at center stage, as if we were in a grand ballroom, and you will be welcome to mingle on the stage with the performers, and even sing with them for the Brindisi! (How often do you get an opportunity to stand on stage next to an opera singer, and actually live the scene, rather than watch it!) The first act will happen throughout the theatre, in the aisles, on the stage, in the orchestra area, and all around. This will be a double event, partying to celebrate the opera house, but also, being guests at Violetta’s party. At the point in time where the guests all leave the area, so will you all, and find your seats for the remainder of the show. There will be a long intermission between the first and second acts, and then a brief pause between the second and third acts, to allow for the scenery to be adjusted.

Logistics:

In order to make the scene work, there needs to be a little coordination from you!

1. As for the performance attire, if you plan on joining Violetta on stage at her party, please dress to the nines! As formal as you would want to be, would be ideal, to give the scene the shape and look that it needs!

2. We fully anticipate lots of champagne being poured, and the odds are fairly good that some might spill on the floor, on the seats, and potentially on your clothes. While yes, this is a reason to dress up, please do not wear anything that would be catastrophic if champagne were to spill on it!

3. The music for the “Brindisi” will be the majority of what you’ll sing while on the stage, but there are a few small phrases afterward that the cast will sing, but to feel part of the scene, you may want to learn them as well! Click Here for a youtube tutorial on the song, for which you could show up on the night of, and participate. If, however, you are interested in participating but want an opportunity to go over the music with Maestro, we will set up an hour session on the morning of our production week. If you would like to come to the barn and get comfortable with the music ahead of time, please fill out this form, and we’ll be in touch about the sessions offered!

4. There is an option (not required, by any means) of being a choral part of the opera in a substantive way - including the second act. If you are interested in joining the production in that way, please fill out the form above, and indicate so. We’ll be in touch about going forward!

Susan Hayden: "What a beautiful wonderful experience, especially for my first time in a theater since spring of 2020."

What a beautiful wonderful experience, especially for my first time in a theater since spring of 2020. Also my first live Opera ever, and great to have it in the barn that I've driven by daily for over 30 yrs. The music was beautiful with songs warmly filling the barn. I also loved that the cast really portrayed their emotions with voice and actions throughout. A great night for me. Thank you to all for sharing your talents with us.
